The Percussive Arts Society Massachusetts Chapter is proud to announce its 2010 Solo Xylophone Competition. The Competition will be held in conjunction with the 2010 Massachusetts Day of Percussion on March 21, 2010 at the Boston Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts.
The competition will be divided into two age groups:
College Division (18 - 24 years of age)
High School Division (18 years of age and younger)
The competition will consist of two rounds both of which will be held on Sunday, March 21st at the Boston Conservatory. The preliminary round will be held beginning at 12:00 noon and will be conducted behind a screen and will be closed to the public. The final round, to be held later in the afternoon, will be an open session to Day of Percussion attendees and will not be screened.
Prizes:
First prize winner in each division will include a $150 cash award. College division first prize winner will also receive at pair of Zildjian Classic Orchestra Cymbals. Additional prize packages of mallets, sticks, and music will be provided by industry sponsors.
Applications:
The application deadline is March 1st, 2010. The number of contestants may be limited and applications will be considered in the order that they are received. To apply, complete the application form below and send along with a non-refundable application fee of $30 payable to PAS Massachusetts Chapter to:

Admission to all Day of Percussion events is included in the competition application fee.
Repertoire for the College Division:
Excerpts:
- Gershwin - Porgy and Bess (Opening only)
- Copland - Appalachian Spring
- Messiaen - Exotic Birds
(rehearsal numbers 6 - 7, and 26 - 28)
Solos:
- George H. Green / arr. Vinson - Southern Dreams

- Bach - Any transcription of the contestant's choosing
- Additional contrasting etude or solo of the contestant's choosing
Repertoire for the High School Division:
Excerpts:
- Gershwin - Porgy and Bess (Opening only)
- Shostakovich - Polka from the Golden Age Ballet
Solos:
- One to two minute excerpt from non-ragtime xylophone solo of the contestant's choosing (for example, Bach - A minor Violin Concerto,
from Goldenberg's Modern Method for Xylophone, beginning through 5th measure of D)
- Ragtime xylophone solo of the contestant's choosing
Judges:
The judges for the Percussive Arts Society Massachusetts Chapter 2010 Solo Xylophone Competition will include:
-Nancy Zeltsman, Boston Conservatory, Berklee College, Zeltsman Marimba Festival
-Daniel Bauch, Boston Symphony Orchestra, New England Conservatory
-Donny Albro, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra
Additional Information:
Applicants are asked to provide two copies of their optional repertoire selections for the judges' use.
Applicants are also asked to bring their own mallets and music for their performance. Softer mallets are encouraged for practice and warm-up prior to the competition.
Specific information on instruments, warm up time, and available warm up spaces will be provided with application confirmations following the application deadline.
The judges reserve the right select a winner after only one round of completion.
