Massachusetts Day of Percussion:
"A Celebration of Xylophone"

The MassChap 2010 Day of Percussion was a great success. A very big thank you to all those involved: the clinicians, performers, vendors, competition participants, and sponsors!



The 2010 MassChap Solo Xylophone Competition featured students from across Massachusetts competing in the High School and College Divisions. The judging panel consisted of Dan Bauch (Boston Symphony), Nancy Zeltsman (marimba soloist), Jack Van Geen (San Francisco Symphony), Keith Aleo (Boston Conservatory), and Donny Albro (Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra). Following winners were announced:

College Division
1st Place: James Charrette (Boston Conservatory)

High School Division
1st Place: Ted Babcock
2nd Place: Charles Rosemarin

Massachusetts Day of Percussion 2010 will be held in Boston on Sunday March 21th, 2010 at The Boston Conservatory. The Day is the second in a series exploring the literature of a particular percussion instrument, following our successful 2008 Celebration of Snare Drum.

This event will feature the premiere of several new concert and pedagogical works featuring xylophone in solo and ensemble contexts. High school and college age students will compete in a Solo Xylophone Competition. Commissioned works and selected winners of a Xylophone Etude Competition will be included in a published volume of works that will be released for purchase at the event. Performances and classes at the event will cover ragtime, orchestral, and contemporary uses of xylophone, as well as its other manifestations in Ghanaian, Ugandan, and Guatemalan music, Harry Partch instruments, and the contemporary marimba. Plus tons of awesome prizes will be raffled off!

Featured presenters will include:



Joe Galeota, West African drumming specialist



Nancy Zeltsman, renowned marimbist



Daniel Bauch, Boston Symphony percussionist



Mario DeCiutiis, creator of the MalletKAT



John Grimes, Timpanist and Harry Partch scholar

Plus performances by:

  The Berklee West African Drum and Dance Ensemble
  Boston Conservatory Percussion Ensemble
  Boston University Percussion Ensemble
  Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra Percussion Ensemble

All-day admission is $10 for PAS members, $10 for parents of PAS members, $20 for non-PAS members. Non-PAS members may sign up for membership at the event, or do it now at PAS.ORG. Admission includes one raffle ticket; additional raffle tickets may be purchased for $1 each.

Solo Xylophone Competition

We are hosting a competition for high school and college age xylophonists at the DOP. Prizes include $100 cash as well as sticks, mallets, instruments, and accessories from Grover Pro Percussion, Innovative Percussion, Promark, Vic Firth and other vendors!

Xylophone Etude Competition
sponsored by Bachovich Music Publications
in conjunction with the PAS MassChap

The Second Annual Massachusetts Etude Competition begins now! Winners of the competition will join commissioned composers in a new Xylophone Etude Book published by Bachovich Music Publications. The new book will be released at the Day of Percussion.
