SETUP #2
| Instruments djembe opera gong gurio tambourine splash cymbal small cowbell bell tree 2 small metal pipes piccolo woodblock clave glass bottle pedal cowbell pedal woodblock |
The right hand holds two beaters: a thin dowel and a hard rubber mallet; the mallet is on the outside. The left hand remains bare. Any regular notehead is played with the left hand, X's with the right. Specification of which right-hand beater is unnecessary and will be decided by me based on the passage; specification, however, can be made simply with written word.
The guiro and bell tree, unless otherwise indicated, will be scraped. The small cowbell cannot be played nearly as loudly with the left hand as it can with the beaters; rimshots on the djembe will always sound at forte or louder; other balance considerations are of minimal concern.
In the above notation, the regular noteheaded instruments may be played with the hand or with the beaters (e.g., the opera gong may also be played with beaters and notated with an X notehead); the X noteheaded instruments may only be played with the beaters. All djembe strokes for both the left and right hands are represented in the above key.
Articulation:
Articulation is controlled by the left hand (or foot). Muted (dead) strokes should be notated with a plus sign (+) over the notehead.
The following instruments, by using open and dead strokes with left hand or left foot, can produce different articulations:
djembe - low and medium strokes (not high)
opera gong
tambourine
pedal cowbell
The djembe, opera gong, and cowbell will produce stopped tones with dead strokes and ringing tones with normal strokes. The tambourine will exclusively produce the sound of the jingles with dead strokes and of both the sound of the head and jingles with normal strokes.
The following instruments can be muted by the left hand and struck with the right hand for different articulations:
djembe - rimshot and head
opera gong
tambourine
splash cymbal
The opera gong and splash cymbal may be muted with the left hand during or just after the attack of the right hand. The former will be notated with plus signs, the latter can be notated simply with muting indications (railroad tracks, coda symbol, etc.).
Different note lengths (but not too long) can be achieved on the scraped instruments: the bell tree and the guiro.
